Clarence Albert Schive, Jr.

Clarence Albert Schive, Jr. was born September 29, 1932 in Coal Township, Northumberland Co., PA. He was the son of Clarence Albert Schive and Ethel Mae Carpenter.

Clarence, Sr., was a carpenter. The struggling family of seven lived in a rented basement in Shamokin.

Al joined the United States Air Force when he was only seventeen. He did not finish high school, but later received his equivalency diploma. He became a flight engineer on C-141 transport planes and KC-135 tankers. He served in Korea and Vietnam. He met his future wife while stationed in Bermuda. He married Mary Marguerite Salette Vicario June 10, 1957 in Alexandria, Fairfax Co., VA. She was the daughter of Maria Salette Galante and the late Angelo Michele Vicario of Philadelphia.

Al and Marguerite had the following children: Marie Clorinda, Salette Ann, Robert Michael, Judith Carmel, and Laurie Anne.

During the Vietnam conflict, Al's unit rotated in and out of Thailand, so he would be gone for three months at a time, and home for a month. He served for twenty years in the Air Force, retiring as a technical sergeant.

After he retired, he worked as a mechanic at Fort Dix, and later for Rice and Hollman Ford.

Al was a Boy Scout leader. On August 7, 1976, while hiking the Appalachian Trail with his 15-year-old son's troop, he had a fatal heart attack. He was 43 years old. He died in Stroudsburg, Monroe Co., PA, and is buried in Beverly National Cemetery, Edgewater Park, NJ.
